Children

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these”
-Matthew 19:14

All Saints’ Church takes seriously the promises that we make at baptism: “To do all in our power to support these [children] in their life in Christ.”

Our formation program is designed to help children know that first and foremost, they are loved by God. We bring them along in the faith by introducing them to Holy Scripture and the traditions of the church. Our goal: to help children feel like INSIDERS IN THE FAITH who are being empowered to do God’s work at home, on the soccer field, at school or in the world.

Children's Chapel

Children’s Chapel is available for children ages 4 to 2nd grade. Children experience the first half of the service in a chapel with child-size altar, cross, and chairs. They learn about our faith traditions by participating in all of the parts of chapel: carrying the cross, lighting the altar candles, reciting a children’s creed, and offering their “Prayers of the People.”

Each Sunday, they are presented with the gospel story of the day in child-friendly language with an interactive activity. They begin the service in chapel and return to the main congregation at the Peace so that they may receive Holy Communion with their families.

Nursery

Skilled nursery care is available Sunday mornings from 8 to 11:15 a.m. for infants to 3-year-olds. All nursery workers have completed Safe Church training and have had a complete criminal background check.

Decorated with colorful, ocean-themed décor, the nursery is equipped with age-appropriate playthings and loving staff.

Day School

All Saints’ is pleased to be home to one of the finest preschools in Virginia Beach, All Saints’ Day School. A play-based program, the Day School is one of three preschools in Virginia Beach to be designated by Lynnhaven River Now as a Pearl School for their eco-friendly practices.

Children's Choir

The All Saints’ Children’s Choir sings at Sunday services at least once a month. Members of this group must be in grades 1-5. Rehearsals are led by Reve. Scott Foxwell in the choir room at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Vacation Bible School

All Saints’ provides a week of faith formation the first week of August each year from 9 a.m. to noon. Each day children gather together for chapel and the story of the day before dispersing into workshops: music, art, recreation, and feast.

Our VBS model is based on the Godly Play, “Montessori Method” pioneered by Episcopal clergyman Jerome Berryman.

Acolytes

Acolytes play a very meaningful and enriching role during the worship service. The acolytes are responsible for lighting and extinguishing the candles at the beginning and conclusion of each service, bearing the cross in procession, and serving the celebrant in preparation for the Holy Eucharist.

Any person 10 years of age or older may become an acolyte and bear the cross and/or light and extinguish the worship candles. Confirmation is an additional prerequisite for those who serve at Holy Eucharist.

The acolytes at All Saints’ are led by one or two of the adults in the congregation who provide guidance and training to prospective servers. The parish priest also plays an integral part in their training. Becoming an acolyte is a meaningful step in a youth’s religious life as that young person becomes an integral part of the worship service.
